What is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance?

A Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance is sold by private companies and can help pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. A supplemental or Medigap plan provides additional coverage to healthcare deficiencies that you may be exposed to under the Original Medicare Part A and Part B. Within the Medigap policy, there are 12 different standards of health plans. Every Medigap policy must follow Federal and state laws designed to protect you. Since these plans are “Standardized”, each policy must offer the same basic benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it. Cost is usually the only difference between Medigap policies with the same letter sold by different insurance companies. Price and service can vary by company, however, so it is important to research and compare and find the best plan for you.
